Redeeming Work: What does it mean? – Graham Hooper

Originally posted at Life@Work here.

Sometimes people writing or speaking about ?Faith and Work? use the term ?Redeeming work?. It?s not a term that appears in the Bible, and is often not well explained. I, for one, am left asking ?what does that really mean in my work situation?

In the Bible, to ?redeem? means to rescue or deliver? by payment of a price. Jesus Christ has paid the price to redeem us from our natural state of captivity to sin and its consequences in order to belong to him and to live for him ?whose service is perfect freedom?. What then does it mean in practical terms to say that our work is part of that redemption? [Read more…] about Redeeming Work: What does it mean? – Graham Hooper

Work and Life: Balance, Juggle, Chaos or More?

GJH PIC March12 bHard work?

Recently, I?listened?to a talk?given to a group?of Generation?Y people. The?speaker was a?young man in his?late 20?s and the?title was ?living a balanced life?. Looking at the?speaker, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, and at?the audience, I assumed somewhat arrogantly,?that this would be an argument for a laid-back?lifestyle, involving a minimum of work and effort?and a maximum of relaxing on the beach and?partying. Wrong! It turned out to be a very wise?and helpful biblical exposition about the virtue of?hard work and its value in the sight of God. Competition? ?I always want to win?

?The trouble with the rat race is that even when you win you?re still a rat? ?Lily TomlinGJH PIC March12 b

Introduction

Is competition God?given, and therefore fundamentally good? ?Or a result of the fall and therefore fundamentally bad, or somewhere in-between? To what extent are you motiv
ated by your competitive instincts in your workplace? Like ambition, competitiveness can be a very positive Christian quality when it channels the drive to fulfil our God-given potential to be creative, to serve, to step out in faith. It can also be very bad when it leads to self-obsession, self-aggrandizement and self-promotion. [Read more…] about Competition? ?I always want to win?

The big juggle- balancing work and family: Graham Hooper

A good friend of Malyon Workplace, Graham Hooper, recently spoke at a Melbourne City Bible Forum breakfast event.

You can watch the whole presentation here and read Andrew Laird’s summary of what Graham had to say Laird here.? The key questions that Graham addressed were:

  • ?What is my calling? (Hebrews 12:1-2)?
  • ?What do I really value?? (Matthew 6:19-24, Mark 8:34-37).
  • ?What relationships has God entrusted to me?? (Ephesians 5:21-6:4, 1 Timothy 5:3-8).

I liked this concluding comment from Andrew:

One final reflection that Graham made is to encourage us to recognise that workplaces keep functioning long after you’ve left. ?The corporation is designed to survive without you. The machine is designed to drop you off and keep going?. This truth alone goes a long way towards reorienting our perspective on work in relation to our families, and so helps us as we seek to navigate the complex issue of balancing work and family responsibilities.

Our Mission of Work – Graham Hooper

Sermon from Graham Hooper at Chuwar Baptist Church

“How do we minister and apply contextual application of the gospel into our own back yard when it comes to serving our community by sharing and showing the love of Christ. Most of our hours are not spent doing church activities, so how should we regard our secular employment? Graham has some practical advice on how we should view our hours spent within the workplace and community.”

?The way of a fool seems right to him but a wise man listens to advice? (12:15)

In a large machinery repair workshop where I once worked, the foreman had posted this notice in large print on the wall:

Wisdom at Work #2 ? The value of wisdom at work

?Wisdom is more precious?than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her? (8:11)

In most workplaces, we value, skill, experience, leadership, reliability and commitment. Depending on the task we may also value creativity, communication, technical accuracy and management ability. Wisom seldom rates a mention. Think back to any job interviews you have attended…was the question ?is this person wise?? on the agenda at any point?? Probably not. And yet the Scripture tells us that wisdom is more valuable than precious jewels and absolutely essential for us in order to steer our way through all the challenges, difficulties and temptations of life.
