God’s Plan for Work – Matthias Media publication

God’s Plan for Work is a neat little publication from Matthias Media. ?It includes three articles from Paul Grimmond that were previously published in The Briefing. ?

I picked up my copy at Koorong recently but you can read (and download) the PDF’s of the three articles as follows:

  1. God’s plan for work: the cultural mandate
  2. Vocation: What’s that?
  3. Work, value and the gospel

The big juggle- balancing work and family: Graham Hooper

A good friend of Malyon Workplace, Graham Hooper, recently spoke at a Melbourne City Bible Forum breakfast event.

You can watch the whole presentation here and read Andrew Laird’s summary of what Graham had to say Laird here.? The key questions that Graham addressed were:

  • ?What is my calling? (Hebrews 12:1-2)?
  • ?What do I really value?? (Matthew 6:19-24, Mark 8:34-37).
  • ?What relationships has God entrusted to me?? (Ephesians 5:21-6:4, 1 Timothy 5:3-8).

I liked this concluding comment from Andrew:

One final reflection that Graham made is to encourage us to recognise that workplaces keep functioning long after you’ve left. ?The corporation is designed to survive without you. The machine is designed to drop you off and keep going?. This truth alone goes a long way towards reorienting our perspective on work in relation to our families, and so helps us as we seek to navigate the complex issue of balancing work and family responsibilities.

Our children’s first glimpse of the value of work

Top article from the Gospel Coalition Faith and Work Channel exploring how the work of stay-at-home mothers demonstrates the creative and redemptive aspects of God’s work.? Stay-at-home mothers image God in what they do!:

“In the debates about who should stay home and why it matters, though, the value of stay-at-home work itself is often lost. But this?work points to a God who brings order out of chaos, who lays down his life for those he loves.”

Preparing for “Fruitfulness on the Frontline” – sermon

HumeRidge Church of Christ?is one of the churches using LICC‘s Fruitfulness on the Frontline material in February-March 2015. ?

Because HumeRidge??had not done the Life on the Frontline series previously, Associate Pastor Neale Prolloecks invited me to come and do some introductory teaching that would provide a background to the series that they could build on in the next 8 weeks.

You can watch a video of the morning service message here, or listen here.

Check out the fantastic frontline templates (made out of white corflute) that helped set the scene!

If you would like a copy of the sermon and a PDF of the PowerPoint slides, please drop me a line at info@malyonworkplace.org.au

Seminary Education – Paul WIlliams

Paul Williams, Executive Director of the Marketplace Institute at Regent College, Vancouver speaks to the Faith@Work Summit, Boston, 2014:

.

Summary

Whether through excellence, absence or mediocrity, theological education has a huge influence on the Church?s devotional and missional life and this is no less true for those seeking to live faithfully and fruitfully as disciples of Jesus Christ in the marketplace. In recent decades a host of new resources have been developed by seminaries and Bible colleges to help marketplace believers. How do we evaluate these? In what other ways could these educational institutions support faith at work? In addition, we need to ask some broader questions: What is the role of the local church in theological education? Are theological education institutions currently capable of helping the faith at work movement? We?ll consider these questions as we seek to grasp the opportunities that our present moment offers us ? a moment in which both the need and the awareness of the need for quality theological education for faith and work integration is growing. Monday Matters – Interview with Mark Bilton by CPX

Work, in one form or another, takes up a large chunk of our lives. Does Christian faith have anything to say to our experiences of success and fulfilment – or of boredom and failure – at work?

Mark Bilton has been a CEO and director of several multinational companies, and has won awards for his work as a ?change catalyst?.?He is also the founder of Called to Business, an organisation that helps people think about the role of faith in the workplace, and the author of Monday Matters: Finding God in Your Workplace
