In this address?(50:17), Greg Gilbert, co-author of The Gospel at Work explores the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30)
He takes the view that the talents referred to in the parable are the opportunities and responsibilities rather than some special capacity that we might have. ?The opportunities and responsibilities are not restricted to what we do when the church is gathered but what we do when the church is scattered.
“While you wait for Jesus, work! ?And do that with energy and faithfulness and love for you King” (12:30)
Gilbert shares five observations from the parable:
- Realise that ultimately, whatever you do, you work for the King
- Talents (opportunities and responsibilities) are God’s to give and he gives them unequally
- What matters is faithful, energetic service in your assignment, not the size of the return
- Joy and freedom in our assignments comes from knowing and loving the King
- Being a Christian is not just a matter of avoiding doing something wrong – rather it is burning up our lives in the service of the King
